Jump to: navigation, search

The Pearl Islands are a group of 183 tiny and mainly uninhabited islands about thirty miles off the Pacific coast of Panama in the Gulf of Panama. The most important islands include del Rey Island, San José, Pedro González, and Saboga. The greatness of the Pearl Islands is most evident in the undisturbed natural beauty, abounding marine life and rich history, with dolphins, whales, sea turtles and whale sharks, many colorful underwater coral gardens and secluded sandy beaches. They were discovered by pirates and explorers such as Sir Francis Drake, Henry Morgan and Balboa. The Pearl Islands were once famous for their abundance of pearls; the most famous gem is a 31-carat, 400-year-old Peregrine pearl, now owned by Elizabeth Taylor.
