Ngoble-Buglé

Ngoble-Buglé is a protected indigenous county located in the Republic of Panama. It was formed late in the 20th century (1997 to be exact, during President Mireya Moscoso’s presidential administration) taking some land from the neighboring provinces of Veraguas, Bocas del Toro and Chiriquí. The comarca’s, or “county” if you will, is composed of 169,130 indigenous townsfolk, mostly of the Guaymí tribe which itself is made up of Ngöble and Buglé groups. Each one of these groups speaks its own dialect (Ngabere and Buglere, respectively).

Emberá

Emberá is an indigenous reserve, created on November 8, 1983. The comarca, as it is more commonly known as, was created taking territory from the Chepigana and Pinogana districts in the province of Darién, with an area of 4,384km2. Its capital is Cirilo Guainora, and there is an estimated population 8,246 as of the last census made in the area in the year 2000. The comarca is divided into 2 districts: Sambú and Cémaco.

Kuna de Madugandí

Kuna de Madugandí is an indigenous territory. The reserve, or “comarca” as it is most commonly referred to as, was created in the year 1996 taking some territory from the area of Chepo, which is located in the province of Panama. Most of the population that calls Kuna de Madugandí home is composed of Kuna Yala ethnicity, many of them who came to the city from the Kuna Yala indigenous territory looking for better opportunities. Kuna de Madugandí has the distinction of being an area that is not divided into districts, but it does have its capital in Akua Yala.

Kuna de Wargandí

Kuna de Wargandí is an indigenous reserve. The territory was created in the year 2000 under President Mireya Moscoso’s administration, taking 775km2 of land from the province of Darién, more specifically the district of Pinogana. The area is not divided into districts but the comarca, as its most commonly referred to as, does have a capital in the community of Nurra. The population of this indigenous territory is composed almost completely of Kuna Yala indigenous people.
