Reggaetón, Born in Panama, Bred in Puerto Rico

I bet you thought that reggaetón came from Puerto Rico. Actually, it originated in Panama!
Reggaetón has its roots in Panama, where Spanish-language reggae was apparently developed in the 1970s by Jamaicans who were descendants of immigrants who helped build the Panama Canal. The new fusion caught on in Puerto Rico, where rapper Vico C (Luis Armando Lozado Cruz) produced the first Spanish-language hip-hop record in 1985. Eventually, the two influences combined into a music that appealed to urban youth in Puerto Rico and ultimately evolved into contemporary existing Reggaetón.
In 2004 reggaetón gained widespread popularity in the United States, eventually gaining attention in many western countries. This was due to N.O.R.E. introducing the genre to mainstream American radio and club scene with “Oye Mi Canto,” followed by Daddy Yankee’s album “Barrio Fino” and his mega hit single “Gasolina.” “That song Oye Mi Canto was the key to introduce reggaeton to the masses,” says Daddy Yankee. “It’s like what Rapper’s Delight (by the Sugarhill Gang) was for the hip-hop movement in the early ’80s.”
Other popular reggaetón artists include, Nina Sky, Nicky Jam, Zion y Lennox, Rakim & Ken-Y, Voltio, Calle 13, Héctor El Father, Ivy Queen, Wisin & Yandel, and Tego Calderon, Alexis Y Fido, Angel & Khriz, Tito El Bambino.

Reggaeton is more rap than reggae and spanish rap was started in P.R. Where Ruben Dj, Vico C and Brewly MC set it off. Nando Boom and El General were doing their thing but their music is not directly related to reggaeton. Spanish rap evolved into what was known as Underground with Playero, The Noise and DJ Adam starting to experiment with a lot of different beats, including reggae beats. Eventually underground evolved to what is known as reggaeton. Thats wassup.
I confess, this music is a guilty pleasure of mine and part of what drew me to Panama back in 2002. It’s a huge part of Panamanian culture, which is incredibly creative, diverse and rooted in music.
The music that we know today as reggaeton which is mostly Spanish rap/hip hop mixed with different beats, yes, including reggae, did not come from Panama but had its rise and surge in Puerto Rico. Panama had a very popular conception of Spanish reggae which is not the same as what is TODAY known as “reggaeton” which, admittedly has very little to do with reggae as a genre even though invidividual songs may have reggae beats as individual songs in many genres do. You should have pride in your country and culture but informed reporting is the key to an A in truthfulness.
TITO EL BAMBINO & RKM Y KEN-Y ARE THE BEST!!!!!
Let it be known that without JAMAICA and REGGAE there would be no REGGAETON!!!!!!!!!!
The largest concentrations of JAMAICANS outside of JAMAICA is in the UK,US,COSTA RICO and PANAMA. I know this because it’s my business to know! I’m a Jamaican and I have relatives in all of these countries and incidentally its where I conduct business as well. REGGAETON started and became a fixture in PANAMA long before its arrival in PUERTO RICO. The genre eventually got its name when it caught on and was named by PUERTO RICANS.
Hip Hop and Reggaeton are both derived from Reggae.
