Playa Venao, Panama- Central American Surf Championships
I had the pleasure of attending the Third Annual Central American Surf Championship in Playa Venao, Panama this past weekend. The normally barren beach was filled with surfers and fans representing a diverse handful of nations. Balboa, the popular Panamanian cerveceria, sponsored the event and set up a judges stand, beer tents, a main dance stage, and a music van blaring out hits. The three day competition was topped of with dancing and partying to the famous Panamanian artist Rookie. While Panamanian surfers gave a valiant effort, the Costa Rican team won the title. Panama came in second, followed by Nicaragua, El Salvador, and lastly Guatemala. From Costa Rica’s Jaco beach, Jason Torres won the Open Event, while Nataly Bernold took home1st place for the Women’s Competition.
This coming weekend, March 28-30th, Venao will once again play host to the Latin American Surf Championship (ALAS), sponsored by Reef.
