Mano de Piedra’s legend even extended beyond Panama. I remember people celebrating his big wins country-wide as a kid in Costa Rica. This guy is a hero in all Central America.

Dely Valdez? The list is very gringo-centric. As a soccer/football player Dely Valdez, along with Duran, is probably one of the best known Panamanian athletes in Europe and South America.

Great subject….Many boxers of course. One of my favorite baseball players when I was a kid was Ben Oglivie. He was born in Colon and was the 1st non-American(north american) to lead the American League in home runs. This was when he played for the Milwaukee Brewers. They had a great team. Ben had the most violent swing waggle of the bat I’ve ever seen.. Including Gary Sheffield and Gary Matthews Sr. Anyway…peace

What about Ben Oglivie, most homeruns in MLB for any Panamanian (235) and 41 homers in one season…back when it MEANT something?
