Panamanian Catcher Hopes For World Series Title

Panamanian Back Catcher Carlos Ruiz

A back catcher from David, Chiriqui could be the next Panamanian to make this country proud. Carlos Ruiz is hoping his National League baseball team, the Philadelphia Phillies, will be the winners of the 2008 Baseball World Series.

The 29-year old right hander made his major league debut in May, 2006 and has earned respect on the field and was selected to the 2007 Topps Major League Rookie All Star Team. In June 2007, Ruiz stole home base in a game against the Cincinnati Reds, making him the first Phillie to steal home in 10 years and the first Phillies back catcher to steal home in a quarter of a century!

The Phillies and their World Series foes the Tampa Bay Rays have each won a game in this year’s Fall Classic. In his five at-bats during the 2008 World Series, Ruiz has a batting average of .400, which is much improved from his .219 regular season batting average.

In Game One of the World Series, Ruiz batted in a fellow Phillie in the fourth inning, helping the team win the game 3-2. The series is now tied at one game a piece. The Phillies take on the Rays at home for game 3 tomorrow night. You can bet Panamanians across the country are cheering on #51, Carlos Ruiz!
