Panama Top 5: English Blogs

blogger1.jpg

A good blog, like a good man, is hard to find.
1. http://www.rob-rivera.com/

Fun, satirical, and the know on the art /music scene. A busy site; it takes a while to load sometimes. Rob has thoughts from current events: “the real estate boom pushed forward by Americans, Canadians and Europeans has kick-started a strong degree of social discomfort due to the notion that Panama is being sold piece by piece, fearing that there will come a time where Panama won’t be for Panamanians at all.” to tacos: “Legends of the Rock Cafe tacos curing illnesses such as depression, the flu, breast cancer and Parkinson’s have not yet been verified, but I can tell you for a fact that they sure as hell brush off a foul mood when you’re so mad you could scorch fire and eat babies.” Funny and relevant, Rob is at the top of the pack of the Panamanian bloggers. He also has organized such quirky activities as “the zombie walk” in Panama City.

2. http://www.bananamarepublic.com/

The satirical, controversial favorite, this sight prides itself on taboo subjects, edgy opinions and great writing. Plus, it is the best name for a website. Ever.

3. http://www.thepanamareport.com/

Witty, sassy, salty and also knowledgeable, The Panama Report is filled with pictures and also humorous blogs totally in love with Panama: “Polished bankers in trendy Hugo Boss suits stand in lines along side indigenous Kuna Indians wearing traditional hand-made garb. It’s crazy! School children, taxi drivers, business men on lunch breaks side by side. From the first time I met my neighborhood, I could feel its heartbeat. It’s this thumping, rousing heartbeat and without any effort, I am somehow part of it.” The enthusiasm is infectious.

4. http://www.boqueteguide.com/

This sight is run by an American couple living in Boquete since 2006. Some of their blogs revisit the trials and tribulations of being an ex pat, a home owner and leaning Spanish in Panama. This blog might be highly useful to other older foreigners considering on moving to Panama, or ex pats that live here might find comfort in similar situations. There are loads of pictures and well-written articles and reviews.

  1. You forgot to mention the # 1 blog in Panama

    Prima Panama Blogs

  2. How about thepanamanews.com

  3. Defintely need to put Don Winner’s Panama Guide on your list. Best english language news site in Panama. You can scratch primapanama, just more real estate sales propaganda.

    IMHO, Bud

  4. Don Winner’s site is not a blog: it’s re-published news articles sprinkled with opinion pieces. Prima Panama’s site is basically the same thing: reposting articles that have been published elsewhere. Every now and then these guys post their own articles, but its mostly regurgitation.

The Panama News is good, but it’s not a blog. It’s an online newspaper.

If you look at what a blog really is (meaning opinions on a subject, or an online diary of original content) I think this list is pretty darn accurate. I’d also submit food gone wild at http://www.heidibella.com and Cojito’s hilarious sex blog http://www.thepanamapages.com

  5. MJ has got a point! Amen.

  6. Cojito definitely belongs in the list, but so does Sam Taliaferro, because he was declared the best Latin American real estate blog by Latin Business Chronicle.

You think that is a great thing, but it isn’t.

See, everybody knows that our precious country is governed submarine-style. Dive deep in case of trouble, make no noise, speak no word and don’t make any waves. This, in short is the Torrijos philosophy of how to run a country. It doesn’t matter that nothing ever gets done and a couple of madmen have taken over the torpedo room; on the long haul the strategy keeps Torrijos safe and out of trouble he can’t handle – which is ALL trouble.

This, now, prompted aforementioned Latin Business Chronicle to festively declare Torrijos “Latin American Leader of the Year” a couple of years ago. After that, other leaders, businessmen and business media outlets have obviously actively sought to be excluded from any shortlist to be nominated whatever of the year by the publication. It’s difficult enough as it is to do business in this region without the guilt-by-association that any type of nomination would inevitably incur.

Unfortunately, Sam has been unable to escape that ugly faith, and in the spirit of solidarity in the Panamanian blogosphere I would suggest we include him in this list here in what would be at least an attempt to offset any damage done to him.

  7. I will fight anyone who tries to take away my #1 spot, real estate or otherwise. I’m a beast when I’m on bourbon! Don’t tempt fate, folks…

I have zombies. I do walks with them.

  8. [...] ambiguously gay phrase as Bananarama Republic came in at #2. Geez, I waltz into these sometimes) by checking out the Panama Travel News piece right here. You can also engage in the lovely clash of the titans going on in the comments section. I [...]

  9. my favorite blogs by category are:
    current events=prima panama
helpful advice for gringos= the panama pages
    fraud/violence/politics=bananama republic

eric jackson doesn’t use a blog format but his site is a good one. he works hard. nice photos

if you can read and write in spanish, panama america is a news site that allows for comments. public officials get shredded to pieces on that site.

  10. EyeOnPanama.com is really good.
