Panama Top 10: Reasons to Live in Panama

The following list is in no particular order, because we all have reasons dearest to our hearts:
1. Weather- More predictable than current U.S. weather patterns. Snow in the South? Panama’s weather is always warm, save for a humid or rainy day a few times a month.
2. Beaches- Drive an hour to a perfectly untouched beach, that’s Panama. Depending on what type of sand your looking for, Panama has it all: dark, rocky, shells, pristine white sand.
3. Mountains- Closest to Panama City we have El Valle, where climes cool down and lush vegetation reigns. To explore a more developed area and visit a volcano, try Boquete in the mountainous Chiriqui province.
4. Islands- Bocas, San Blas, Isla Iguana, Isla Grande…islands in Panama number well over the days in a year. Each island has its own climate, people, and atmosphere. All are ideal for snorkeling and diving.
5. History- There is only one Panama Canal; the importance of which is scarily underexposed. From the various indigenous tribes, to the fascinating political and economical history, walking around Panama is like stepping into a history lesson.
6. Restaurants- A diverse international population goes hand in hand with a diverse and plentiful number of restaurants. From French to Colombian food, any night of the week you could dine on a different foreign fare.
7. Banks- Panama is a banking haven with the amount of offices here numbering in the hundreds.
8. Real Estate- It would be a surprise to go out for a night on the town and not run into someone who tells you they are in Panama, looking to buy land, sell land, develop land…or mabye they aren’t so forthcoming, and say something mysterious like, “i’m dabbling…”
9. Holidays- I have never lived in a country with so many national holidays. The month of Februrary may as well not exist. Celebrating Carnaval was an unforgettable experience this year. With pre-Carnaval warmp ups, to post-Carnaval “carnavalito” celebrations. Partiers enjoy three solid weeks of fiesta-ing, if they so chose to indulge.
10. Nightlife- Note: if you have a gambling problem, avoid Panama City. Casinos here are small and inviting, unlike overwhelming mall-sized, agoraphobic-inspiring, Vegas-style casinos. The numerous bars and clubs also stay open until the wee hours and offer something for everyone.

Good list, but you left out the number one reason that most North Americans and Europeans move to Panama, according to a recent survey: cost of living. Life in Panama is far more affordable than in North America. One can live in moderate comfort at $1,000 a month, and very well at $2,000 a month.
As far as banks, let me just add the caveat that banks here are generally oriented toward corporate offshore needs. They are not really big on customer service when it comes to individuals. Also, some recent questionable legal judgments have called into question the security of bank funds here.
