Panama Has Reason To Celebrate Once Again

Panamanian Margarita Henriquez (left) Wins Latin American Idol

Hot on the heels of Panama winning an Olympic gold medal in Beijing, Panama now has another great reason to celebrate. Margarita Henriquez, a resident of the Azuero peninsula, has won Latin American Idol. Panamanians are fiercely patriotic and with Henriquez’ win, you can feel the pride throughout the country.

Margarita beat out Costa Rican Maria Jose Castillo in Thursday night’s episode of the hit series, based on the popular series American Idol. Immediately following the announcement of her win, fireworks and horns could be heard throughout the Azuero peninsula and the rest of Panama. Henriquez is from La Villa De Los Santos, a small town just outside of Chitre in Herrera province. At 17 years of age, Margarita is the youngest winner of Latin American Idol, in it’s three season history.

Fans from across Latin America watched last night’s live results show, broadcast from Argentina. Panama and Costa Rica have a very competitive history, and even though the results between the two finalist were apparently close, Panamanians are extremely pleased to have “their girl” beat out the young Costa Rican.

Because Panamanians are so proud of Margarita’s win, you can be sure there will be a huge parade and events on Monday when she returns to Panama from Argentina. Along with winning the hearts of all Panamanians, Margarita also won a recording contract with Sony Music as well as a car!

  1. When I entered a bar on Thursday night where everyone was watching the show, I interpreted their chanting as a special drink promotion going on, as if everyone was telling me what I should drink. So I ordered one. Then two. And because that show took so long, by the time she won I was shocked to see my three margaritas were each at full price: $7.50. The celebrating and parade will be less festive for me.

  2. I guess we should invite her to sing at the Grand Opening of Casita Margarita hotel in Pedasi! :)

  3. Hey we did name the Casita Margarita after her right!!
