More Protests in Panama, Students Take Action

Panama City, Panama- Students Protest Inadequate School
During the past three months, Panama has seen a surprising amount of protests in relation to construction workers rights, public transportation and now, the school system. Yesterday, high school students protested by vandalizing their own school, for the second time. The first protest occurred on March 27th, but yesterday’s was by far more serious. Students clothed in white with their faces and heads covered, destroyed classrooms, blocked traffic on Avenida de Marytrs, and threw stones at police vehicles upon their arrival. This school, Instituto Nacional, hasn’t been updated since the turn of the century. The irony of yesterday’s protest is that the vandalism which occured was a cry for improvements in the building. With the upcoming election season, it will be interesting to see how, if at all, the candidates will treat these issues that have become subjects of unrest.
