Mondo Taitu (”Tin Roof…Rusted!”)

Whilst in Bocas del Toro, Cailey and I heard that Mondo Taitu Hostel was the place to be on Tuesday (80s night!) So we ate dinner and waltzed in around 10. This was a mistake as everyone was already wasted and sweaty, wearing multicolored wigs from the “costume trunk” (shiver) and dancing around merrily in the sauna of heat that was the hostel. Appropriately, the song “Love Shack” came to mind (“Tin roof…RUSTED!”)
I guess we missed happy hour, (8-10) and that was too bad because we had to do some serious catch up in order to even stomach putting on one of those wigs. Lively 80s favorites played and although there was some dancing, (not enough) there was still raucous, rowdy mingling among the young international guests. We saw water get dumped on a blond girls head, and kooky drunk employees dressed in costumes fraternized with guests… reminding me of a slightly hotter version of some of the more rowdy hostels we stayed in in Europe (Holla The Yellow, Rome!)
The night ended rather abuptly for us, when the bar closed around 11: 30 or 12, but we hadn’t been drinking since six with everyone else. It seemed the entire bar crowded around the entrance to decide where to go next…we headed somewhere close by and danced for a while, but paranoid of being left without a water taxi after hearing a horror story of two boys sleeping on the docks all night, we headed back to The Aqua Lounge.
Mondo Taitu seems to be the place to stay on the main island. The hostel part is separate from the bar for convenient sleeping purposes. We even met some boys who said that they were sleeping in the Tree House which personally sounds thrilling. Next time we just have to get to 80s night earlier to snag one of those wigs.
