Panamanians don’t generally celebrate thanksgiving, but due to the amount of US tourist and residents there are a number of places throughout the country where turkey and all the fixings were served yesterday.

With at least another 24-48 hours of rain expected in Panama’s worst effected areas, flood victims are beginning to assess their losses. 8 people have been killed, 5 remain missing and at least 15% of the crops in Panama’s premier agricultural area have been lost.

Flood Damage In Panama’s Chiriqui Province
The entire country of Panama has seen an incredible amount of rain over the past week, but the worst hit are the provinces of Bocas del Toro and Chiriqui. The are varying reports of deaths and injuries as a result of the heavy rains.

Panama’s bantamweight boxer Celestino Caballero, has taken the International Boxing Federation title from Canadian Steve Molitor. The fight, which took place in Orillia, Ontario on Friday night, saw Caballero register a fourth round technical knock out.

Last week while visiting Canada, I was flipping through TV stations when I came across an episode of an MTV show that was shot in Panama. The show is called “Exiled – The Real Deal” and takes spoiled, coddled, rich kids and puts them in a trying situation for a period of time.

Panama has a lot of advantages thanks to its geographical location. Hurricanes are not common in Panama, unlike in other countries on the Pacific. Panama does however get a handful of earthquakes. Last night was one of the bigger earthquakes that Panama has felt in a while.

Panama Will Give Out 6 Million Fluorescent Light Bulbs
Many environmental practices common in North America and Europe and not often found in Panama. In Panama you won’t find blue boxes for recycling, people burn garbage including Styrofoam, and conserving electricity is not very common, especially with big businesses.

Driving in Panama is a challenge to say the least. Panamanian roads and highways are in much better condition than in many other Latin American countries, but they are still not comparable to North American roads.

For the most part, Panama offers a safe and secure environment to buy and sell real estate. Unfortunately, there are some loop holes in Panama’s laws that can leave a person homeless.

Panama is a fairly small country with a cosmopolitan capital city. Within Panama City you can find just about anything you may need. Once you leave Panama City, that’s not always the case. Panama’s interior towns are so small that up until last week, you couldn’t even find a traffic light outside of the capital.

Panama has a pretty extensive holiday schedule. November and December are the two months with the most national holidays. It’s pretty tough to get much done between now and the new year due to all of the holidays.
