Many canoeists think paddling across the Panama Canal is a piece of cake, but that’s just not true. To successfully cross from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic in a canoe requires planning.
First you’ll need a laptop with wireless Internet to carry along in your canoe. Why? So you can communicate [...]

Living in El Cangrejo definitely has its benefits, one of which is the abundance of good restaurants. Harder to find, however, are breakfast joints. When I first moved here my favorite place to go on a weekend was NY Bagel. It’s always interesting to see the crowd of weird expats hanging out and mingling. Recently, [...]

I am strange.
Those who know me can cite endless evidence to support that statement, but what may be most obviously weird is my living situation. I have no home. Or rather, I have two homes. Most business men who travel for a living call one place home and merely pay visits to [...]

I can’t lie to you…I knew better.
But knowing better still didn’t stop me from renovating a beach house in a remote corner of Panama for use as a B&B. Every expat seems to dream of owning a B&B near the beach. I didn’t. After a decade of watching investors lose their butts in the developing world, I knew the [...]

Panamanians wait their turn.
Our week at Carnival ended by standing in the boiling morning sun with 200 hungover Panamanians, waiting for the bus from Chitre to Panama City. Despite the fact that we stood for an hour without moving and I had already eaten part of the provisions Cailey’s mom packed for us for the ride [...]
