Panama’s bantamweight boxer Celestino Caballero, has taken the International Boxing Federation title from Canadian Steve Molitor. The fight, which took place in Orillia, Ontario on Friday night, saw Caballero register a fourth round technical knock out.

A back catcher from David, Chiriqui could be the next Panamanian to make this country proud. Carlos Ruiz is hoping his National League baseball team, the Philadelphia Phillies, will be the winners of the 2008 Baseball World Series.

Aside from the occasional downpour, Panama is the perfect place to take up golfing. A few years ago there wasn’t much in the way of golf courses in Panama, but that is quickly changing. Golf pros and amateurs now have a number of options throughout the country.

Long Jumper Irving Saladino – Panama’s National Hero
Olympic gold medal winner Irving Saladino is back in Panama. The government declared today a government holiday, allowing tens of thousands of Panamanians to greet Saladino at the Albrook Airport upon his return to Panama.

Will Panama Bring Home A Gold Medal?
The Olympics are now underway in Beijing, China and Panama is represented by five athletes. Panama’s most famous boxer, Roberto Duran is the nation’s sports ambassador in Beijing. Panama has claimed just two Olympic medals, both bronzes, earned by Lloyd LaBeach in 1948 for the 100m and 200m in track and field.

One Of The Many Large Fish Caught In Pedasi
Playa Arenal in Pednuasi hosted its annual fishing tournament this past weekend. The event is popular with Panamanians as well as foreigners. More than 50 boats took to the water off Pedasi to compete for the top prize of an outboard motor.

The Veraguas’ slugger was chosen as the Most Valuable Player of Panama’s professional baseball league. This is his second such honor, having received the MVP award in 2005. He is in his 16th season in the local league.
