Costa Rica Language School
Costa Rica's
language and spanish schools offer a multitude of options for
those who wish to learn Spanish, or brush up on their Spanish
speaking skills. Programs vary tremendously, depending on your
skill level, time of stay, and budget. Classes range from two day
"survival courses" to semester long programs. For most tourists
visiting Costa Rica, one or two week classes are the most common.
Students or tourists planning an extended stay might opt for a
longer, more intensive program.
For those whose budget and time
allow, a homestay with a Costa Rican family might be an attractive
alternative. These programs can be arranged through your language
school, and usually require a minimum stay. Several tourist
magazines contain classified sections which list privately
advertised homestays. These offerings, while a bit less expensive,
might not provide the same level of service, or care as those
arranged through your school. Also, be prepared to negociate your
homestay in Spanish, as not all those advertising homestays will
be able to speak with you in your language.
Living with a Costa Rican family
will provide you with an opportunity to speak the Spanish
language, as well as acquire a greater understanding for Costa
Rican culture and lifestyles. These homestays are not cheap, but
normally accommodations, meals, and laundry services are included.
Also, it is not uncommon to find your self sharing a home with
several other students; sometimes as many as four. This we do not
recommend, as the presence of other students, more often than not,
will only prevent you from learning Spanish. All to often you will
find yourself speaking your native tongue. We suggest homestays
that provide accommodations for the fewest number of students.
