Liberia Nightlife

The most popular dance club in Liberia for the younger crowds is Kuru. This dance club, located just outside of the city on the other side of the red light, gets more crowded on the outside as cars and people line up to see who is out and about and purchase drinks from the outdoor bar service. The entrance fee is about $4 on the weekends and the music is a variety of typical latin beats from merengue to cumbia to reggaeton.

Across the street from Kuru is the gay-friendly Bar de Luna. This bar is open until past sunrise, and is where most people choose to end the night. The music is great for dancing, and there is rarely a cover charge. It is also growing in popularity for drug users despite the owner’s attempts to fight the problem.

Bar LIB is one of the newest additions to the nightlife scene in Liberia and can be found on the second floor of the Plaza Santa Rosa. This coveted position offers views of party goers heading down the street to where dancing is more popular. It has a very modern design, with blue and red light definitions. The bridge that you must cross to enter serves as a sort of runway so everyone can check out who is arriving.

La Machaca is a large typical restaurant/bar with very friendly owner who doubles as a bartender in the back. A big screen TV is sure to have the national soccer teams playing, or random music videos in lieu of a game. Their food, though typical, is quite good as well, try the ceviche or chicken burritos.

Just 2 blocks from the central park down Paseo Real you will find the bar creatively named Paseo Real. This college-style bar has spunk with its random furnishings, decorations and lighting. The music alternates from hard rock to alternative to reggae and the people are fashion conscious, in the ‘black is back’ sort of way. It is open quite late and a good place to grab a drink if you are staying at any of the hostels in that area.

For a more typical experience, try Los Chaparros which is frequented nightly by Mariachi groups, often battling each other to win the affection of the drunken visitors. It is located on a corner 2 blocks from the Liberia stadium, east of the town center. On the other side of town, near the main bus terminal you will find La Selegna a true blue-collar bar with tight seating and a big screen TV for watching the big game. During horse parades, this becomes the main watering hole for people on horseback, and a palm-covered area is constructed over the sidewalk to tether horses to and provide some shade for the thirsty cowboys.
