Zapote, named after a sweet, soft fruit, is mostly residential, home to more than 22,000 people. Although it often seems very removed from the hustle and bustle of San Jose center, is actually San José city's fifth district. However, the district also features several government buildings, including the Presidential House, which, while not the president's own home, is the seat of the Costa Rican federal government. In addition to its governmental buildings, Zapote also boasts Multiplaza del Este, one of the country's largest and most modern shopping malls.

Despite its governmental and commercial importance, Zapote is most famous for its much-awaited yearly festival, Las Fiestas de Zapote (Zapote Parties). For several days following Christmas, Zapote plays host to humane bullfights, heart-pounding carnival rides, huge portable bars and dance halls, cotton candy, and chinamos, small food stands promising delicious, homemade local favorites. Much larger than the average carnival, the Zapote festivals are one of San José's favorite yearly events, and thousands of Costa Ricans show up here every night for some good old-fashioned carnival fun.
