Poas Volcano
[edit] Overview
Deemed the “natural fireworks” of Costa Rica, the lava flow from the Volcano Arenal is one of the most awe-inspiring sights in the country. It is said that the volcano experiences small eruptions at least every 45 minutes, making it one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Unwilling to bow down to the gentle giant, the Poas and Turrialba volcanoes have been making a stir recently with increased hydrothermal activity, including eruptions of gas from the main craters. The Irazu volcano towers above the nearby town of Cartago as the tallest active volcano in the country, although its last eruption was back in 1963 and went on for two years. A perk to visiting a volcano hot spot in Costa Rica is that the temperature tends to take a refreshing dip in comparison with the coastal heat that the country is known for. Don’t worry about being too cold though, as luxurious hot spring resorts are plentiful and promise to warm you up instantly.
