The Hotel Grano de Oro, located in the center of San Jose, was built at the beginning of the 20th century, and is reminiscent of these days of fine glory and glamour. It has 32 spacious rooms, uniquely decorated with exquisite taste, complete with all the services and amenities one expects in a hotel of these standards.

The rooms come in various categories. The standard rooms, which are the smallest and cheapest option, are comfortable and intimate. They have a Queen size bed, and a private bathroom with shower. The Superior rooms are similar, with a bathtub/shower and also a Queen size bed. The Deluxe are the most spacious rooms and include a private bathroom with bathtub and a shower, with either a Queen size bed and one single, or two Queen size beds, or one King size bed.

The Family Suite consists of a two-room suite with one Queen and two Single beds, accommodating up to five people. The Garden Suite is really spacious and elegant with a Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom, and a sitting room. It has a private entrance leading to the enchanting tropical garden of the hotel. The Vista de Oro Suite is the best you will find not only in the hotel, but most probably in town. It is only possible to reach it by climbing a small private staircase. What makes it so special is the outstanding view of the entire valley and of the Cordillera Central. The whole suite is beautifully decorated with hand painted tiles. This will transport you to paradise, right there in the center of San Jose. Admire the small palms, the tropical flowers and see the humming birds attracted by the scent of the flowers they come to feed regularly in the garden. The soothing sound of the little fountain will certainly relax you while the Jacuzzi on the rooftop is simply out of a dream!

All the rooms and suites of the hotel offer you accommodations of the highest standards, the bathrooms are all exquisitely decorated, the furniture is made of precious wood, and it is as comfortable as can be expected for a hotel of this style. The Britannia Hotel is located in Barrio Amon, in the center of San Jose. Barrio Amon is without a doubt the only district of town that has kept its colonial look. Part of this is thanks to the fact that many people have turned local historic buildings into small hotels.

The Britannia Hotel is indeed exceptional with its high ceilings, original thick brick walls, arches and stained glass windows. It really stands as one of the most classical hotels in town, with an elegance and distinguished atmosphere reminiscent of Victorian days. Exotic rugs, mosaic tile floors and colorful wallpaper give it a finishing touch that is difficult to match.

The hotel is actually composed of two parts. The old part has been adapted into five Deluxe Rooms and five Junior Suites. The restaurant is located in what used to be the cellar, thus its name “The Cellar”. The recently added part consists of a four-story building with 14 standards rooms, all with cable TV, telephone and a luxurious bathroom where you can relax in style thanks to a beautiful bathtub.

All rooms include a safety deposit box for customer security and convenience. The new rooms are furnished with either a King size bed or two singles. These rooms are located on the first, second and third floors, and are accessed either by stairs or by taking the elevator. In addition they all have ceiling fans, room service, laundry service a coffee maker with delicious Costa Rican coffee on the house, and a wake up call service. These rooms are especially popular with couples and travelers, or for short stays.

The Deluxe and Jr. Suite rooms have, in addition to all the items listed for the standard rooms, desks and/or tables, hair dryers, and are furnished with either one King sized bed or two Queen sized beds. Comfortable sofa beds have also been added for extra room. They are located in the original old house that was built in 1910 by some coffee producer and was designed by one of the most prominent architect of those days, Jaime Carranza Aguilar.

Later on the house became the property of the famous Rohrmoser family. Some work to expand and remodel the building was undertaken in 1992 and in the end of 1993 the annex was completed.

This hotel was built to provide a higher standard of satisfaction, offering a personal and professional service to each customer according to their needs. It is as a whole resplendent. Wherever you look there is a surprise, some small detail that catches the eye. The restaurant and the bar, with their cozy and intimate atmosphere, add the finishing touch to this magnificent hotel that you will never want to leave. Menu items include Almond Trout, Fettuccine in shrimp sauce, crepes, and Strawberry Romanoff.

The hotel also provides transportation to and from the airport, a laundry service, and baggage storage. A very professional and helpful tourist information desk will provide you with tours, information on where to go and what to see. There is free, 24-hour wireless Internet access and do not forget to visit the souvenir shop.

Rates are as follow: Standard rooms: from $77 single to $100 triple depending on the time of year, Deluxe Room from $93 to $131 and the Junior Suite from $106 to $147. Children under 10 are free and each additional person for the Deluxe and the Junior Suite only pays $10 plus taxes.
