The Lankester Botanical Gardens is without a doubt one of the key attraction of the Paraiso area. Lankester Gardens were named after a British Botanist, Charles Lankester. Almost 100 years ago this garden was just a coffee plantation. Lankester became fascinated by the variety of Orchids found on the trees and started this collection. Today it is home to 600 of the 1400 species of Orchids found in this country.
With its variety of micro habitats, orchids and bromeliads and its abundance of colors and beauty it will transport you in an enchanted, magical landscape, especially if you happen to be there between February and March. It is also excellent for bird watching. Look out for the green houses with miniature species on display. You will find the gardens on the Paraiso road out of Cartago, and it is opened from 8:30am to 3:30pm.
If you have time, try and visit the Finca de La Flor de Paraiso, translated the Paradise Flower Farm, or the Association for the Development of Human Consciousness. This is a small non-profit organic farm, which offers free tuition on sustainable farming and reforestation.
