Despite being mostly known for its natural splendor, Costa Rica has been around as long as the rest of the region and has managed to rack up a few cultural landmarks worthy of notation. The center of San Jose is littered with important government buildings including the National Library, National Post Office and sticking to the theme: the National Theater. As religion plays an important role in society, the Basilica de Los Angeles in Cartago is considered to be one of the most important landmarks as well as the sight of a giant pilgrimage that takes place in August to honor the Virgen de Los Angeles. Another area rich in history is Guanacaste, which was annexed from Nicaragua in 1824. La Casona, history museum is dedicated to the last battle of the war in Santa Rosa. While Liberia is the capital of this region, many claim that Santa Cruz is the town most dedicated to folklore in the country, and a visit to a Costa Rican bull fight is a must for visitors to experience the region’s cowboy culture.
