Cartago Hotspots

Cartago is a great day-trip from San Jose. However, many visitors may be drawn in by the charm and choose to spend several days here and even make it the base for further day trips. The area has a cool, cloudy climate and is rich in colonial history, although numerous natural disasters have leveled most of the remaining evidence of these days gone by. The pre-Colombian ruins of Guayabo are currently under excavation, while the original inhabitants have yet to be identified. The Basilica de Los Angeles is by far the most recognizable historical and religious site to see in the region, while the natural wonder of the Irazu Volcano sits just beyond the town as a constant reminder of its disastrous eruption that occurred just one century ago.
