The Thrill of a Good Catch

My first oceanic fishing experience was quite different than the typical river float I was used to. We started out trolling with two lines in the water using fly rods. Although this was not the most common rod to use on the open sea, we were told that it could do the job. After trolling for what I thought was forever, I got a bite and immediately after the other pole had one as well. We fought for the fish and when it finally came in, we were told that it was not a very great tasting fish so we tossed it back. Although not edible the exhilarating thrill of bringing one in was fantastic.

Nearing the end of the day and all we kept getting were throw backs and needless to say we were a bit disappointed. Then all in an instant it hit us. We had a big fish on one of the lines. This one was a fighter. After fighting with it and letting it run to get tired we reeled it in to find a beautifully colored Dorado. It was blue-ish teal and around 25 pounds. The luck had rubbed off and we caught 4 more that day. Of course back at the marina we ran into other fishermen that had caught Sailfish, Marlin, and Yellow Fin Tuna, but that did not phase us, we were there for the thrill.

Costa Rica is a great fishing spot. There are plenty of tours with experienced and bilingual guides that can show you ropes and take you to the hot spots.
