Taking the bus is a great way to get around Costa Rica…it is cheap, easy and convenient. In San Jose there are several terminals going to different regions. Buses go to all towns and are very prompt. In my experience they leave right on the dot and refuse to wait for anyone. The cost is very affordable- generally about $4 -$5 to get you anywhere you want to go. The buses are pretty comfortable and usually stop for a restroom/snack break halfway through long trips.

There are also usually people coming on the bus to sell snacks, or sometimes ask for donations for charity. This is a great way to travel the country- but make sure you get your tickets in advance as they often sell out.
