Costa Rica is well known as one of the top surfing destinations in the world! From narly waves for the pros, to gentle waves for beginners, Costa Rica is a great surfing destination…..in fact people travel from all over the world to catch the perfect Costa Rican waves!

My first experience with surfing was definitely less than successful…it was at Playa Hermosa where the waves are sometimes even too rough for experienced surfers, and I had no idea what I was doing…needless to say I did not come close to getting up.

My second attempt was much smoother…my friends and I took a surfing lesson at Tamarindo. This is known as a great beach for beginners because of the consistent waves and many places guarantee you will get up after one lesson. The lessons usually cost around $20 – $30 for an hour. The first part of the lesson is on the sand, and the teachers simply demonstrate the basic motions, while everyone passes by and stares at the people rolling on their stomaches in the sand and jumping onto imaginary boards. After that you head into the water to try your luck. BOth my friends and I got up shakily a few times.

I recommend trying surfing, it is really challenging and fun, but I personally think a lesson is a good idea for those that have no idea how. And be prepared for some sore muscles the next day!
