Getting out of the City

This past weekend was my first typical Costa Rican adventure.  It was Friday afternoon and a car full was ready to head to the beach.  I had been itching to see the country ever since I arrived and it was now my chance.  We had decided to go to Manuel Antonio for the long weekend.

The drive there was a bit stressful as traffic in and around San Jose was quite dense as it was Friday afternoon.  Once we got out of San Jose the adventure began.  The road to Manuel Antonio was windy, steep and long.  It was fun to see the other parts of the country on the way but for the most part sitting in the back seat was a bit rough.  The car we were in was an old Land Rover which had a top speed of 50 kph.  So needless to say lots of people were passing us and there was no conversation as the engine was too loud to talk over.   All in all the drive was not bad as we had a chance to drive through the town voted to have the best climate by National Geographic, stopped to see a river full of crocodiles, and enjoyed a beautiful sunset at the top of a hill.   In addition, we had a chance to experience the amazing Costa Rican transportation system.  It was pretty funny to see how a country so reliant on tourism and its bus systems, and the crappy roads.  Some of the bridges were one lane without a traffic signal on either side.  Although there are signs of improvement and construction, I would much rather leave the driving to an experienced driver.

At last we made it. Our escape from the city had begun and it proved to be a great weekend hanging out on the beach, experiencing the nightlife, and visiting the park.
