The Arenal Volcano is a Top Costa Rica Travel Destination.

“Do you hear it, do you hear it?” This is the question my friends and I repeated over and over as we stood in awe of the extraordinary Arenal Volcano. Located just outside La Fortuna in San Carlos, Costa Rica, the Arenal volcano is an awe-inspiring site. The volcano erupts regularly ever 30-45 minutes. You can actually hear the gurgling and rumbling as the boulders fly down the side of the mountain! At night, if the clouds have cleared out, you can see an unforgettable fireworks show of lava as it spurts out the top of this very active volcano. Magnificent!

It’s hard to believe, but in addition to the Arenal volcano, there are lots of other highlights in this area. The La Fortuna Waterfalls are absolutely incredible and surrounded by some of the most beautiful rainforest in the country. Be warned though! It’s a steep hike down, so a horseback ride or ATV can be a great alternative to an exhausting hike. Don’t miss swimming in the fresh water surrounding the waterfall. This is the perfect way to cool off after your adventure to the falls!

Don’t miss the opportunity to take part in the quintessential Costa Rican canopy tour. There are several options in the area for this exciting ride through the trees, but my personal favorite is the tour offered by Arenal Mundo Aventura. The ziplines are safe, the staff professional, the views indescribable, and the ride unbelievable. You won’t be disappointed with this awesome experience!

If a canopy tour isn’t your cup of tea, perhaps you’d prefer whitewater rafting, fishing, mountain biking, a cultural tour, or a Safari float. These are just a few of the other fantastic tour options available surrounding the Arenal volcano. Any of these activities would be an unforgettable way to spend the day in Arenal!

Finally, the rejuvenating waters of the natural hot springs are the perfect way to relax at the end of a long day of hiking and exploring. Whether you go to Tabacon, Titoku, Baldi, or Ecotermales (my personal favorite), you won’t be disappointed with the relaxing atmosphere and refreshing hot springs! This is a must-do in the Arenal area!
