Family Ties
One of the nicest things that I have noticed in my time here in Costa Rica is how close the families are here. This is most apparent on Sundays if you visit a restaurant, or a park and observe the many families out to enjoy the afternoon together.
Last weekend, on Sunday afternoon I was at Parque Central, right in the middle of downtown San Jose with a friend. We were surrounded by small kids and families enjoying the day outside. Ladies were screaming to sell corn for photos, and the little kids would put the kernels on their heads as the parents took pictures of pigeons sitting on their heads. There were many young families and many laughing, screaming and running kids.
This weekend at Jaco (which has the reputation of being one of the sleaziest places in Costa Rica) I noticed something similar on Sunday afternoon! While eating at a restaurant I noticed that we were surrounded by large tables of families drinking beer, eating dinner and looking like they were having a great time.
This is one the things I like most about Costa Rican culture. There is a lot of emphasis on family ties, and people are affectionate and warm in public. This is definitely a nice sight to see to pick you up on a Sunday afternoon!
