Hermosa Surf town
Costa Rica News – Playa Hermosa Surf
A surf fanatic dream spot, Playa Hermosa. As an American surfer living in Costa Rica, the beach is a must every weekend. I live and work in San Jose, the capital city (the only city in Costa Rica) so getting to the surf is a constant activity of mine. With so many great spots I was bombarded with options, where to go? Where to stay? How to get there? After scoping out a good percentage of the country, exchanging thoughts with Ticos and traveling Gringos my every weekend getaway, no question in my mind, the best place is Playa Hermosa.
Not to be confused with Playa Hermosa of Guanacaste or the many other small beaches named Playa Hermosa, I am talking about a little spot just south of Jaco Beach in the Puntarenas Province.
Here’s what I like about the beach:
1. The Waves are always good! Head and over every time I’ve been. High tide is generally bigger, but low is still fun, you can surf all day!
2. Hotels. There are lots of beach front hotels which are really cheap $35 per room on average (Cabinas Las Arenas is my favorite).
3. People. Great surf culture here, lots of travelers from all over, local and foreign.
4. Not over developed, just a really small surf town. There is one bar (The Backyard), and one town store.
5. Close to Jaco. If there is one good thing to be said about Jaco… it does have a couple decent bars.
6. Easy to get to. If you live in San Jose or are flying into the San Jose airport, buses leave from the Coca Cola Bus Station almost hourly and only cost $3. The bus stops in Jaco but a short cab ride gets you to Hermosa.
For those who disagree bring it on! Tell me why you think your spot is the real deal.
Tuanis Mae!
