8th Costa Rica National Surf Circuit begins this Weekend

The first of seven events, the 3-star Copa Mango, will take place this weekend in Playa Jaco for the 8th Costa Rican National Surf Circuit (CNS). The competition will take place in front of the Hotel Copacabana at 7am on Dec. 8 and 9.

The 5-month long tournament, which is internationally sponsored by surf brand giants such as Roxy and Billabong, will take place at six different beaches throughout the country. This year’s veteran competitors include 2007 CNS champion Diego Naranjo, Luis Vindas, Federico Pilurzu who ranked in the top 100 on the World Qualifying Series, Gilbert Brown who came in 3rd at the Pan American Surfing Games, Jairo Perez who recently won the ALAS Reef Classic final competition in Costa Rica, Jason Torres, Isaac Vega, Nataly Bernold and Lisbeth Vindas.

“Costa Rica is maintaining a very high international reputation in surfing right now and that’s because of the Circuito system,” said Costa Rica Surf Federation President Ureña. He argues that the CNS is an opportunity for young kids to gain inspiration by the success of fellow Costa Rican surfers, as well as compete against them.

In order to spark more interest among new surfers in the longboard category, Diego Naranjo, Luis Vindas and Mauricio Umano will be competing in the division. The longboard division is part of all international competitions, and better Costa Rican longboard surfers would bring up the entire country’s score.

Last year’s CNS champions are Diego Naranjo (Open category), Nataly Bernold (Women’s and Junior Women’s), Jairo Perez (Junior), Carlos Muñoz (Boys), Michael Torres (Grommets), Tomas King (Mini-grommets boys), Naomi Bernold (Mini-grommets girls), Cedric Auffret (Longboard) and Cassio Carvalho (Masters) among others.

To compete in the Copa Mango, surfers must sign up on Friday, Dec. 7 at the Jass Surf Shop in Jaco between 5pm and 7pm. A FSC membership fee must be paid as well as $10 or $12 to compete in each division.

Other activities at the two day event will include the nomination of finalists for Miss Surf 2008. The nominees will go on to compete in the Gran Finals in April, for the chance of winning $1,000.
