Randall Chavez, a promoter of the event and former Vice President of the Costa Rican Surf Federation, said that the tournament serves to provide the children a different option from their daily routine one time each year and to show them that they are an important part of the community.
After fiver years of giving the children this hope, the Boca Barranca tournament has become a tradition and is one of the most awaited surf events of the year in the Costa Rica surf world. The last four tournaments were all won by Jaco native, Luis Vindas.
Anyone interested can sign up to compete in the event at the shoe store 3A, Ozono Surf Shop, the store Jass (643-3549) or the Hotel Barranca (663-6133) for 6,000 colones. The categories are: Open, Women, Junior, Longboard, Bodyboard, Master and Mini Grommets (under 12 years of age).
“Every year we have had more sponsors trust our organization and offer us their help. We are a group and every one of us adds a little to lessen the workload. The prizes are always donated by the sponsors so that all the money that is collected is to be donated to the Hogar Monserrat,” Chavez said.
The sponsors that make this event possible include: Surfos Magazine, Mango Surf Shop, Arnette, Etnies, Cartoon, the Cantonal Sport Committee, Economy Rent a Car, 3A shoe store, Malibu Surf Shop, La Actualidad, Ozono Surf Shop, Hotel Boca Barranca, Hotel Río Mar and Piko Surf Shop.
A bikini contest sponsored by the Mango Surf Shop will close the weekend’s activities.
