Father Rooster Great Eats

                   father rooster

For anyone traveling to the Ocotal area Father Rooster is a must.  This small beachfront restaurant/bar is a true treasure.  On the small Ocotal beach this is the only place to get something to eat or drink, but it is also the only place you need as well.  The menus are printed on a large piece of cardboard, the food menu on the front and drink menu on the back, maybe visaversa.  The menu has most items you would find in a sports bar and grill; nachos, potato skins, burgers, fries, and much more.  I had the hamburger with fries, hands-down best burger in Costa Rica and the fries weren’t bad either, they were large and freshly cut in house.  The burger came with american cheese, crispy bacon, sauteed mushrooms, and fresh avocado.  The nachos are piled high with fresh salsa and all types of veggies and cheese (they didn’t even look too bad while on the top of one very drunk customer’s head).

For drinks the menu included a large variety of margaritas (frozen or unfrozen), along with many other tropical drink specialities, and as always in Costa Rica a fridge full of Imperial, Pilsen and Rock Ice.  The bar stays open until 10 at night.

The location is incredible for Father Rooster, it is literally right on the beach, making it the perfect place to catch some shade and cool off with a cold drink.  The only downside besides closing early are the prices which are 100% gringo; appetizers are on average $6, a burger with fries ran you $9, and tropical drinks from $6 (very expensive for Costa Rica).  Overall Father Rooster is very much worth the price and I would recommend it to anyone.

  1. Happy to hear Father Rooster is still around and being enjoyable. The last time I was there was probably 25 years ago and locals would ride up on horseback and “hitch” to the porch railing. We have recommended it to our homestay guests over the years, however.
