90 Days in Costa Rica
I have officially been in Costa Rica for almost three months now and over that time I have seen many dimensions of the country. A lot has happened in the since my arrival; the TLC build up, the rainy season and all of its troubles, earthquakes, fugitives, and lots of traveling.
It has been interesting being here during one of the most critical times for Costa Rican voters as I get to experience both sides of the story from a non-Tica point of view. It will be very interesting to see how it all turns out and to see what happens in the months and years following the vote.
I live in a relatively safe neighborhood of San Jose, but I still am not recommended to walk alone at night and to even be careful during the day. I like to run so this was somewhat different for me, but just about everyday I run the same route and I have really come full circle with the people on the route. In the beginning they would pull their children away, not hold on to their dogs, and the guards would pull out their batons. I’m not sure really sure what they expected me to do, but now the same people are always out in their driveway and they send me a friendly wave. The point being that I now feel welcome, not just another random ¨gringo.¨
It took a bit over a month to get used to the country and its people simply because it was foreign to me. Now the grocery store is no longer a big adventure and getting around in a taxi is not too difficult. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and look forward to the adventures that life will through me in the future. Who knows where they will take me next.
