Costa Rica Tourists and locals alike generally do things the “Tico Way” when in the country. “Pura Vida” is a phrase overused by both, ‘taking things slow’ or accepting ‘tico time’ is accepted, or forced upon both, and Ticos and tourists tend to drink Imperial the national beer and Cacique the national liquor.

Surfer Pilurzu Motivates High School Students to Stay in School.
During his ever-diminishing free time, Costa Rica surfer Federico Pilurzu has found the time to woo communities near his hometown in the canton of Santa Cruz, Guanacaste. Pilurzu, who has positioned himself as the main figure in Costa Rica surfing, is currently the only surfer from his home country to participate consistently in the World Qualifying Series (WQS), where he is ranked 85th in the world. The internationally-traveled Tico is now turning his attention homeward to help local children, when his busy WQS schedule allows.

The Changing Dollar Exchange is Stirring up Costa Rica finance Once Again.
The dollar keeps going up and it is not looking as if this phenomenon is going to stop too soon. The banks had to adjust their selling and buying rates again. The selling price (the price you get when exchanging dollars for colones) went from 528.08 colones to 533.65 colones yesterday, July 15, accounting for a 5.57 colones gain. The buying price (when you turn in colones for dollars) went from 521.20 Colones to 526.73.

Gas and Bus Prices Up Again for Costa Rican Commuters.
Both drivers and bus riders are feeling the pinch of high gasoline prices, as pump receipts and bus fares continue to increase. Today and in the coming weeks, belts will be tightened even more, as the Costa Rica government approves even higher hikes in gasoline and diesel prices, jacking up the cost to fill your tank and forcing public transportation to raise their rates as well.

Costa Rica and Panama to Invest in Joint Marketing to Europe.
Though Panama and Costa Rica are rivals for American tourists, the two countries have decided to join efforts in attracting European tourism. Carlos Ricardo Benavides, Costa Rican Minister of Tourism, and his Panamanian equal, the world-famous singer and Panama Minister of Tourism, Rúben Blades, met yesterday, July 14, at the Costa Rica Tourism Institute (ICT) to discuss tourism packages and European marketing strategy.

The Cost of Living in Costa Rica is on the Rise.
Prices are going up throughout the world, and Costa Rica is one of the hardest hit. In addition to rising fuel prices, the costs of goods — imports and exports — have risen, affecting Costa Rica business and life. To illustrate these effects, a study shows that, since 1999, Costa Rican buying power has deteriorated by about 25 percent.

Unused Trains Sit at Old Railway Stations in Costa Rica.
In the midst of global fuel and energy pressures, Costa Rica has researched several ways to alleviate the country’s dependence on outside fuel sources. Though experts are researching energy from marine algae, trash-to-plasma conversion, wind power, and many other ideas, there is one energy-saving tactic that has been ignored until now: 11 unused electric cargo trains.

Bozenka Will Perform in Costa Rica for Mother’s Day.
San Jose’s historic Melico Salazar theater will present a spectacular show by the world famous Belly Dancer Bozenka, who will travel to Costa Rica to perform on Aug. 8 at 8pm. Belly Dancing will overtake the stage with fire and colors, and will feature zills, little cymbals used in Oriental Dancing, fans and exotic costumes or bedlah. The show coincides with Mothers day, and mums are invited to take a course with Bozenka to learn the art of seductive belly dancing.

Styrofoam Take Out Containers May Soon be Replaced by Biodegradable Ones.
When going green, every little step is worth a lot, as Costa Rica knows. In the country’s latest effort, new biodegradable containers, made from African palm, will travel to Costa Rica from the Asian country of Malaysia, and will hopefully replace many of their harmful styrofoam and plastic counterparts. In a country of 3-part casados and plentiful take out, this could have a long lasting impact on the ever-growing landfills.
