An unfortunate situation turned into a never ending list of miracles for the Rocha Arias family from Alajuelita, Costa Rica. The family’s 2-year-old daughters Aurelia and Fiorella, who were born conjoined at the chest and abdomen, made medical history when doctors at the Stanford University’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital in Califorina were able to successfully separate them on Nov. 12 after a 9 hour surgery.

Semana Santa, or Easter Holy Week, is something that should not be missed in any Latin American country. Costa Rica, being the Catholic nation that is, is no exception. This is a great time to see some of the rich culture of the area as each province and town holds dramatic religious processions and services recreating the last days of Jesus’ life.

My friends and I decided to stay at Villas Macondo after a quick glance at the Fodor’s top picks for places to stay in Tamarindo and a phone call to check availability. I didn’t even get to the end of the short paragraph, but at $45 for a room that sleeps three, I figured I could deal with any situation knowing that I had satisfied my frugal tendencies.

Locals of El Gallo, a neighborhood in Liberia, Guanacaste have a stinky problem that they fear may be hazardous to their health. Every day this town sees 10 or 12 dump trucks carrying fecal matter and sewage, which is deposited into old septic tanks. Spillage is common either due to the poor state of the tanks or the fact that they are not well closed.

Panama Business News — Panama City Skyline
Panama enjoyed remarkable growth in both tourism and foreign real estate investment in 2007 . This boom established that Panama, previously known only for its Canal, could be a viable threat to Costa Rica’s position as market leader in those sectors. 2007 saw many of ups and downs for Panama, but mostly ups (real estate prices, pollution in the Bay of Panama, costs of living, Noriega’s middle finger). Here is a recap of what I believe to be the most significant stories ‘07:
