Costa Rica Reigns As World Orchid Champion.
Costa Rica is the reigning “Orchid Champion” of the world, with an amazing 1,600 species taking root within her borders. The delicate flower is known to grow and flourish here, and the country’s own national flower, la guaria morada (Cattleya skinneri), is a particularly beautiful orchid specimen. If you’re here this weekend, you’re especially lucky, as the country puts on it’s annual Exposición Nacional de Orquídeas (National Orchid Exposition) on March 14, 15, and 16 at the Costa Rican Tennis Club (near La Sabana Park).

Gun Ownership is One of the Major Problems Addressed in the Plan.
A new set of laws seeking to reinforce the security of Costa Rica’s residents was submitted to the Legislative Assembly this Tuesday, March 11th. The proposed project was created and is backed by a high level committee from the Executive and Judicial branches of the government. Among the proponents are: the Vice-president and Minister of Justice Laura Chinchilla, the Attorney General Francisco Dall’Anese, the Minister of Security Fernando Berrocal, and Jorge Rojas, the Director of the OIJ – Costa Rica’s equivalent to the United States’ FBI. The proposed plan covers multiple topics, among them fighting organized crime, protecting victims and witnesses of crimes, regulating gun ownership and strengthening municipal and neighborhood security.

ATA Changes its Mind About Flights to San Jose, Costa Rica.
The newest direct route between Miami and San Jose, Costa Rica was discontinued before it ever began. The airline responsible, ATA Airlines, has yet to make an official announcement about the change, but a representative did confirm the cancellation with Costa Rica Pages. Passengers who had already booked the route received calls yesterday to explain that the route has been terminated and that they would be getting a full refund for their flight purchase. This comes less than a month after the original announcement that the route would be inaugurating its first flight on March 15th.

English Instruction to be Improved in Costa Rica.
Of all the countries of Central America, Costa Rica is on top in regard to call centers and industrial parks. Intel was what really tipped the balance upon its arrival in 1997. Today it is the largest electronic components manufacturer in the entire world. Making products here and exporting them to countries such as China has proven to be a great success.

Costa Rica Exports were Left to Rot on Monday.
This past Monday, March 10th, 2008, the main ports on the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica were shut down for 8 hours. Port Moín and Port Limón are the most important commercial ports on the Caribbean coast and are used by passenger cruise ships and commercial container ships carrying Costa Rica’s import and export products.

New Volcano Found in Costa Rica with Crater the Size of Irazu.
Just 170 kilometers north of Costa Rica’s capital city of San José, scientists have confirmed the existence of the country’s 250th volcano. Located in the San Carlos canton, the newly found volcano sits at a lofty 2,300 meters above sea level. Its crater measures 200 meters in diameter, about the same size of Irazú and approximately eight times the size of Turrialba Volcano’s active center.
