Costa Rican Students Await the End of the Teachers’ Strike.
La Asociación de Profesores de Segunta Eseñanza (APSE, or the Association of Secondary Education Teachers), is holding firm in its strike against el Ministerio de Educación Pública (MEP, or Ministery of Public Education) regarding wage discrepancies. Teachers interrupted the commemoration ceremony for Juan Santamaria today in Alajuela just as President Arias was about to speak with drums and signs demanding justice. The strike began March 31 and will continue indefinitely.

High-tech Costa Rica still has room for advancement.
According to a recent report by the Foro Económico Mundial (World Economic Forum), Costa Rica is the most technologically developed country in all of Central America. In addition, it is also the seventh most developed country in Latin America and the Caribbean, behind Mexico, Brazil, Barbados, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Chile. (Chile is ranked number one in Latin America and the Caribbean.)

Coastal Construction in Guanacaste, Costa Rica to be Regulated.
A new Presidential Decree was signed by President Oscar Arias with the intention of regulating real estate development in Guanacaste by limiting the height of buildings constructed in zones that are located near to the beach.

Foreign Artificial Insemination is No Sticky Business for Costa Rican Cows.
Semen from Jersey, Hosltein and Pardo Suizo breed bulls is in high demand from Costa Rican cattle farmers to artificially inseminate their female cows. The amount of semen being imported from countries such as Holland, the United States, New Zealand and others is on the rise. About 40,000 doses of seamen (of 0.25 milliliters each) are imported annually to impregnate cows to improve their breeding, strength, milk production, health and build. Each doses could cost between $7 and $50.

Costa Rica Competes with Nicaragua to Cook Biggest Gallo Pinto in the WORLD.
On this Sunday, April 13, more than 2,000 kilos (4,409 pounds) of black beans and 1,800 kilos (3,968) of rice will be seasoned, spiced, and cooked into enough gallo pinto to feed 30,000 watering mouths. In fact, thanks to the first ever Fiesta Nacional del Gallo Pinto (National Gallo Pinto Party), hosted on downtown’s Paseo Colón, all this delicious pinto will be free of charge.

These Costa Rican girls were chosen as finalists for their natural beauty.
The final contestants for the Miss Surf Organic and Natural pageant were chosen this past weekend at the second-to-last Costa Rica National Surf Circuit 2008 (CNS) event, the Banco Nacional Tournament in Playa Dominical. The first place winner, Stephanny Amador, and her sister, runner-up Andrea Amador, will be traveling to Playa Hermosa for the Gran Terreza Reef Final the weekend of April 26th to compete against the other 10 finalists for the Miss Organic and Natural title.

China will be guest of honor at Costa Rica International Arts Festival.
Friday, April 11 is not just a day of celebration and homage to national hero Juan Santamaría, but also the beginning of San José’s Festival Internacional de las Artes 2008. With more than 350 shows and activities, the International Art Festival will feature 70 groups and individual artists from more than 20 countries and China, Costa Rica’s most recent political ally, will be featured as guest of honor with its own cultural pavilion and special performances throughout the event.

Record number of Ticos trust money to offshore banks.
The presence of offshore Banks in Costa Rica has grown exponentially in recent years. Within the last three years, the total amount of funds these banks have attracted has increased by 65%. This includes money private citizens and businesses have placed in savings and checking accounts, long or short-term money market accounts, retirement plans, credit loans and other financial services.

Costa Rica’s Playa Junquillal is Set to be Much More Accessible.
The 13 kilometer road that goes from the coastal communities of ‘27 de Abril’ to ‘Paraíso’ in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste is getting resurfaced. This short route goes through Las Delicias, Río Seco, Paraíso, Junquillal, Los Pargos, Avellanas, Playa Negra, Callejones and other small communities and has been in serious need of repairs for many years now.

Electricity Bills in Costa Rica Set to Increase up to 41%
The Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) and Public Services Regulation Authority (Aresep) officially announced that the foretold electricity price hike in the country has been approved at a scaled rate ranging from 11% to 41%, depending on the consumption of each user. While this is much lower than the 75% increase that was requested by ICE, it could have many negative effects on the consumer.
