Costa Rica Seeks More Control Over Offshore Banks

In response to a dramatic increase in the presence of offshore banks in Costa Rica, the President of the Central Bank, Francisco Gutierrez, announced that a bill was sent to the Legislative Assembly last week to try to even the tax requirements paid by offshore banks in the country. Currently, offshore banks are exempt from paying a 15% tax on the money they earn from the interest on loans taken out by Costa Rica nationals.

This weekend the Costa Rica National Surf Circuit will host its 7th and final event in Playa Hermosa, just south of Jaco, in front of the Hotel Terrazas del Pacifico. The 5-star event will determine which surfers take the 1st place title in 13 categories. The winner of the Miss Surf Organic & Natural will also be chosen in a separate competition at the end of the tournament.

Urban Arts Festival this Weekend in San Jose, Costa Rica

Parkour will be performed in San Jose, Costa Rica this weekend.

The Municipality of San Jose is at it again, with another strong effort to bring arts into the capital city of San Jose. This weekend on Saturday and Sunday a series of “urban arts” performances will take place from 10am to 7pm in the Plaza de las Garantías, on the south side of the Social Security building. Performances will be held by rappers, acrobatic skaters, bikers, jugglers and more.

Actor Rob Schneider, of Deuce Bigalow, The Hot Chick and Big Daddy, recently finished filming scenes of his new movie The Chosen One near the Los Chorros waterfall in Grecia and the Parque Ecológico Tropical Arenal Mundo Aventuras, an ecological park in La Fortuna near the Arenal volcano. Plans to go on to Guapiles were changed to avoid the transportation.

The Costa Rican government plans to reduce the taxes paid by energy-efficient and low-emission cars. This tax break will cover hybrids, electrics, and those that are powered by biofuels such as ethanol. Automobiles in Costa Rica currently pay between 35% to 53% worth of consumption tax. The tax rate varies based on the car type, engine size and model.

Today, fifteen years after the internet took it’s first baby steps into Costa Rica, about 35% of the Costa Rican population has access to a computer with internet. Academia is conducted through email and over the internet, and more Costa Rican businesses, organizations and companies are realizing the importance of having a web presence. Though not yet completely integrated into many Costa Ricans’ everyday lives, the internet is growing in both popularity and importance.

Tomorrow, Friday, April 18, Costa Rican residents and visitors will see bus prices rise once again. Each one of the 3,642 different fares on Costa Rica’s 732 bus routes will go up between ¢5 and ¢250, mostly depending on the length of trip.
