The Jaco Art Festival will start next Saturday.

On May 24, the festivities begin in Jacó, as the first Festival de las Artes Audiovisuales de Garabito (Garabito Audiovisual Arts Festival) kicks off. The 9-day long program continues in a national campaign to promote culture and the arts, arriving on the heels of the 11th International Arts Festival and the Urban Arts Festival, both hosted in San José.

Britney Spears to Visit Costa Rica this Weekend with Mel Gibson.

Britney Spears, accompanied by her father Jamie Spears, left in a flight for Costa Rica at 9am this morning to visit the 400-acre property owned by Mel Gibson in Guanacaste. Gibson and Spears were spotted together in March at the Romanov Russian Restaurant and Lounge in Studio City California where they dined for over an hour.

Water Prices Increasing
Water Prices May Soon Be Added to the List of Cost of Living Increases in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica’s Water and Sewer Institute (AyA) has asked the Public Services Regulating Authority (Aresep) to approve a 19% increase in the price of water for its customers. In Costa Rica, that could mean an increase of $2 per month for the average family that consumes about 22 cubic meters of water, totaling about $13/month for water.

Plans for Playa del Coco Marina are in the Works
Currently boats in the Playa del Coco bay must set anchor offshore.

The Costa Rican Tourism Institute traveled to Playa del Coco in Guanacaste to evaluate plans for the construction of a marina in the area. The project has already been approved by the Interinstitutional Commission on Tourist Marinas and Docks and is waiting approval by the Carrillo Town Council to receive the necessary concession.

Costa Rican President Oscar Arias has called for a national plan of action and a national agenda that would reduce the causes provoking one of the major problems facing humanity today: global warming. The plan calls for planning seven million trees each year, the promotion of eco-friendly homes in the country, and the continued promise that Costa Rica will become the first carbon-neutral country in the world by 2010, among other things. Arias, along with Minister of Energy and the Environment Roberto Dobles, also hopes to make Costa Rica a world leader in the defense of natural resources and biodiversity.

Costa Rica’s Tourism Offerings Will be on Display Tomorrow at Expotur.

Expotur XXIV, the most important tourism fair in Costa Rica, will take place on Tues., May 13 through Thurs., May 15 in the Hotel Plaza Ramada Herradura Expected to show up are 219 representatives from 140 companies in the tourism industry from the United States, Canada, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Ecuador, Brazil, Uruguay, Spain, Israel, Spain, France and Asia. Of these companies, 45 will be visiting Costa Rica for the first time. They will be given the opportunity to set up meetings with the 270 business representatives from Costa Rica and Central America to form alliances and contracts to promote tourism to the area.
