La Esquina in la California
Written by erin
After a rash of bar closings in the la California area throughout the last year, the bar La Esquina, has surprisingly stepped up to take these now stranded bar-goers and entertain them with hits from the 90s and even sneak in a few favorites from the 80s too for those of us who cant get enough of singing along to some Cure while drinking an Imperial with friends. La Esquina was primarily frequented by the trendy college kids from San Pedro while the bars surrounding it were more targeted toward punk rockers and metal kids. Somehow Esquina has managed to grab the attention of these barless wonderers as a new home away from home.
The bar is located next to the famous El Cuartel de la Boca del Monte and across from what was once “Bash nightclub” and “Tribal”, which now lay in ruin as we wait and speculate about what is to come. The bar is much like many downtown bars, looking like it was once a house that was eventually converted into a bar. It was originally an area that Cuartel would open to support the mass visitors that they receive on Monday nights. When the area was going to become a bar Tuesdays through Sundays, separate bar from Cuartel, it was renovated to be more main stream pop culture with bright colored walls, a few large photographs of striking models with guitars, and some very interesting art work. There is also a partially open courtyard by the bar to get some fresher air if you need it. The best part about the design is that you wouldn’t even know what was inside if you walked by on the street!
Esquina is becoming a favorite place for small concerts and from what i saw lastnight, DJs wanting to spin a few records. The beer is affordable and best of all, everyone is there! So come check it out next time you are wondering hopelessly looking for a beer and good company and not sure where to go.

It you are willing to venture out of the SJO Central area and out to the West Side you can find plenty of other options. Lounges like Sutra in La Ribera de Belen and Grappas on the old road to Santa Ana offer a more upscale chill-out atmosphere.
