Costa Rica Film Festival — Chinese Film Festival this Weekend
The festival represents yet another attempt to bring the two nations together, both economically and culturally. The films will serve to introduce concepts distinct to the Chinese culture to Latin and international viewers. Be prepared for a mental tongue twister of listening to audio in Mandarin Chinese with subtitles in Spanish, if neither is your native language.
The ticket price is 2,100 colones per movie, and one ticket allows entrance for two people (about $2 each). All the profits will be donated to the Alajuelita High School.
On Friday the festival will debut with the 2005 movie Gimme Kudos, which won five international film awards in Shanghai. The film portrays the story of a journalist that is caught up in a story about an attempted rape. He wants to believe his main sources, a young student and the man that saved her, but reality becomes complicated as he struggles with reputations and his professional duty to report the truth.
The movie Héroe will play on Saturday, with famous Chinese actor Jet Li. This story is set in the era before China existed and the land was divided into many provinces. One king has the idea to unite all of them under one ruler. Jet Li is brought before the king to be commended for brave acts, but deception and doubt lead to an unexpected welcome for the hero.
On Sunday, Feb. 10, the festival will conclude with the 2003 movie Guerreros del Cielo y La Tierra (Warriors of Heaven and Earth). This is an epic story that takes place during the Tang Dynasty. A Japanese missionary is sent to follow a criminal to western China and bring him back dead or alive. After facing off against each other, the two end up forgetting their rivalry to fight together in honor of the Emperor.
