Sugar Beach Hotel
The Sugar Beach Hotel recently went through a ton of renovations including many of the rooms and the entire restaurant area. Neither of us had been to the hotel before so it is hard to say how much better it is now than it was… but I can say that everything was of high quality and that the hotel provides a very peaceful ambiance from the rooms and restaurant area to the (semi) private beach.
For those that have never been to Sugar Beach… when people say the road leading to the hotel is a little bumpy, BELIEVE IT! The roads are horrible. I would personally not send any client to Sugar Beach without a rental car… the hotel is completely secluded from any other beaches, restaurants, etc. by a 3km road that would be nearly impossible to walk as it goes through the mountains, so make sure your client knows this ahead of time. The fact that the hotel is actually beachfront and basically secluded makes the crappy roads well worth it. It is about a 50 meter walk from the restaurant to the beach with clear views of the ocean from many of the rooms and beach houses.
This Costa Rica hotel is perfect for clients that want something quiet and non-touristy, but still want access to some of the other beach towns. Tamarindo was only about a 25 minute drive (if you don’t get lost). The beach at the hotel was amazing, Chris and I were the only ones on the beach all day Sunday! I would give the restaurant a thumbs up too. the food was reasonable (3500 colones for dinner) and everything was fresh and tasteful.
I never really sent people to Sugar Beach before visiting but I would highly recommend it now. The beach is incredible and very private, it feels like you are completely secluded while still providing a great location for people who do want to check out Tamarindo or Flamingo.
