Dame Mas Gasolina
Coming from the Eastcoast of USA the most popular type of music for parties, bars, clubs, or for listening to in your car is Rap. In Costa Rica the only rap I have heard are the songs I play off my ipod; here the music scene is much different than back home. Throughout the day I hear the baseline of Reggaeton music coming from cars passing by. At night you’ll hear the same thing on the street but something different in the clubs.
Trendy clubs in San Jose, Costa Rica attract international crowds and spin mostly house and other electronic music, genres you would expect to hear in most of Europe’s clubs. Night spots that attract a more Local crowd will play music you can dance to, and the style of dance here like most of Latino America is Salsa (Meringue also), young crowds know this dance well and produce a scene you would never find in the States. Typically Reggaeton is prevalent at the Tico bars especially in the beach towns.
Rock is another very popular scene is Costa Rica. Many bands play live nightly in the city and occasionally in the beach towns. Some bands have mimicked their favorite bands from the USA and England put a little latin flavor into the mix, were as others have created a completely unique sound.
I admit it is strange going out at night not hearing all the classic songs I am used to which I can sing along with every lyric, however it is good to branch out and learn to enjoy new music and a different scene.
