Boy George and Juanes to Grace Costa Rican Stage

Juanes and Boy George
Two Pop Icons Will be Visiting Costa Rica in the Coming Weeks.

With more than 2 million tourists coming to Visit Costa Rica each year, the country has attracted quite a tourist following. Somehow, though, those visitors rarely include popular artists and groups, who often prefer Mexico or South America for their performance locales. Recently, however, word got out that two popular pop stars will arrive within the next few weeks: Boy George is scheduled for September 20, and Juanes will perform soon after on October 2.

George Alan O’Dowd, commonly known as Boy George, is an English singer-songwriter who was part of the popular 1980s pop band Culture Club. In the 1990s, he transitioned into solo music, which is usually classified as blue-eyed soul, and counts David Bowie and Iggy Pop, among others, as its influences. Despite his unarguable talent, however, Boy George is perhaps even better-known for his turbulent personal life, including a life-threatening heroine addiction.

Though his tour was canceled in the United States, Boy George will still have his Costa Rican debut concert. The pop legend is reported to have prepared an “arsenal,” which includes 18 high-quality musicians, to perform The Best of Culture Club. “Concert-goers will be able to enjoy [Culture Club's] best songs, the concert won’t be about technology, but about energy, with a good stage set and a very technical lights show,” event organizer, Enrique Salgado, explained.

Juanes Esteban Aristizábal Vásquez, better known as Juanes, is a Colombian rocker and pop singer. As a teenager, he began his career in the 1980s, singing with heavy metal band Ekhymosis. In 1998, the group split up, and Juanes set out on his own, recording his solo debut album, Fijate Bien (Pay Attention) in 2000. The album was successful, nabbing Juanes three Latin Grammy Awards, and he has since gone on to record three more albums, which include such chart-toppers as “La Camisa Negra” (”The Black Shirt”), “A Dios Le Pido” (”I ask God”), and “Fotografía” (”Photography”), a duet with Portuguese-Canadian singer Nelly Furtado.

Juanes’ current tour, La Vida World Tour, which promotes his upcoming album, La vida es un ratico (”Life is Just a Moment”), began in New England (USA), traveling throughout the country before heading to Europe and Africa. Finally, Juanes comes home to Latin America, beginning in Venezuela and traveling on to Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Colombia. The show promises to be an amazing spectacle of technology, with a massive lights show, incredible sound, and unforgettable energy.

Boy George will perform at The City club in Zapote on September 20. Ticket prices are ¢30,000 for general admission and ¢50,000 for VIP seating. All tickets carry a ¢1,000 ticket printing surcharge, and may be purchased online at www.mundoticket.com or by calling 2207-2025. Additionally, you may purchase tickets at local stores, including the Curridabat and Guadalupe Hipermas, Bansbach in San José and Escazú, and several Mas x Menos. Juanes tickets go on sale today at www.specialticket.net, though prices have not yet been announced.
