What’s next for Costa Rica?

Now that the referendum in Costa Rica has taken place many people are wondering what is in store next.  As of right now the CAFTA vote has passed and this makes many people happy and many are still a bit frustrated.  One group in particular is the Citizen Action Party, (PAC), which is also a main supporter of the No campaign.

Presidency Minister Rodrigo Arias sent a letter yesterday to the group in hopes of bridging the gap between the anti-CAFTA group and the new CAFTA ways.  They have agreed to meet Wednesday to have a conversation about how the government plans to implement the trade deal and the new laws.  They also plan to discuss other projects including education, security, and small business benefits.

The new laws are supposed to strengthen the Instituto Constarricense de Electricidad (ICE) and Insituto Nacional de Seguros (INS).  This will bring more international and national competition to the telecommunication and insurance monopolies that exist.   The PAC believes that these laws go much further than what the treaty calls for and part of the meeting on Wednesday will be trying to negotiate ways to minimize their impact.

It will be interesting to see what the outcome of the meeting is and to see how Costa Rica will change in the following months and years.   One thing is for sure, only time will tell.
