Saturday Water Outage Planned in Costa Rica

Water outage announced for parts of Central Costa Rica.
Planned water outage to affect 60,000 Costa Ricans.

This week brings Semana Santa celebrations to Costa Rica – chiverre and seafood on the table, Crucifixion reenactment parades on the streets, and church bells
In addition to this week’s phone number change, about 60,000 Central Valley residents need to expect another: if you live in Cartago centro, or the cantons of San José, La Unión, Curridabat, Desamparados, Goicoechea, Moravia, or Vásquez de Coronodo, you should expect to be without water this Saturday, March 22, from 7 a.m. until about 2 p.m.

ICE will take advantage of Sábado Santo’s low activity to do maintenance on the El LLano Reservoir, in Orosi. The reservoir cleans and filters the area’s water to make it potable, at a rate of approximately 300 liters of water per second. During these hours of maintenance, ICE will ensure that the plant is running smoothly, delivering drinkable water to its recipients. To do this, they must clean out the reservoir’s tunnels, thus leaving it completely empty for several hours.

Though the scheduled maintenance indicates a no-water period of approximately 7 hours, maintenance often ends before this, so if you’re in the affected area, your water may be turned back on shortly after noon. But just to be safe, take your shower on Friday night and buy plenty of bottled water to get you through Saturday morning.

Though the week is exciting for Costa Rica residents, filled with many Easter celebrations and big meals, don’t forget that the week also brings new phone numbers and, possibly, a water outage for your area. As always, stay safe, and have a wonderful Semana Santa.
