Speed Bumps Cause Large Traffic Jams in Escazú

Three speed bumps have caused yet more traffic jams for frequent road users on Próspero Fernández, en route to Escazú in San José.

The three speed bumps were created last weekend on the bridge over the Tiribí River, in the East-West, next to the entrance of San Rafael de Escazú. Here, construction company Autopistas del Sol are expanding the road from four to six lanes. The finished result will form part of the new route to Caldera in an attempt to improve Costa Rica transport.

Drivers have been sharply affected by the scale of vehicle congestion. In rush hour (7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.), road users have been stuck in traffic jams of up to 40 minutes, just to enter the Escazú Canton and continue toward Santa Ana.

Lines yesterday extended as far back as 40 meters behind the bridge, outside of rush hour. There were two officials regulating the traffic movement, but their work is not sufficient when faced with the great quantity of vehicles.

The Minister of Public Works and Transport justified the installation of the speed bumps, commenting that they are necessary to avoid accidents in this time of construction. Vibrations produced from the flow of transport represent a risk for construction workers.

For frequent travellers, the recommended alternative is to use the Los Anonos bridge between Escazú and La Sabana.
