San Jose Garbage Strike Over

Since this past Monday, garbage has been piling up around San Jose as a result of a strike.  The garbage collectors wanted to be paid for their overtime hours and they also wanted garbage trucks to be in decent working order as the leased trucks were getting run down and unreliable.  Lucky for the city and the workers, the strike was resolved yesterday as all of the needs were met.

The city currently pays 11,500 colones per hour to lease the trucks, which are in dire condition and often do not work at all.  The manager of the Proyectos de la Municipalidad de San Jose, Marco Vinicio Corrales, talked with the garbage collectors and signed a deal pledging to fix at least 15 trucks and finally pay the workers for their overtime work.  In addition, he also promised to have at least seven new trucks at the cost of $155,000 (US) each by December.

So citizens of San Jose, expect to see your piles of garbage cleaned up by the end of the week.
