Politcal Scandal in Costa Rica
In the past few weeks several key factors have been uncovered concerning the upcoming referendum vote in Costa Rica. Two important political figures have stepped down from their positions after a memo bound for the president was leaked to the press.
Fernando Sanchez, a legislator for the National Liberation Party and a close relative to President Oscar Arias, and Kevin Casas, the Second Vice President, have both resigned. Fernando Sanchez stepped down as chair of an electoral affairs committee and of a development bank committee not as legislator.
This to some is the ¨largest political scandal Costa Rica has ever experienced.¨ It started with a memo addressed to the President advising him to promote a campaign of fear among the population and ¨exert financial pressure and character assassination on mayors opposing the CAFTA (Central American Free Trade Agreement) ¨ with the United States.
The referendum is set to take place on Sunday October 7th.
