A Boardwalk for Playas del Coco Costa Rica

The Playas del Coco coastline will look drastically different in by the end of the year after the demolition of 14 properties and the construction of a boardwalk with landscaping, water fountains, bathrooms and showers.

The decision was made by the Municipality of Carrillo, Guanacaste as part of an urban beautification project for the town of Playas del Coco. The 14 buildings were destroyed because they were constructed within the public Land-Maritime zone which reaches 50 meters inland from the high tide mark.

This was the first time the Municipality has cleared the beachfront zone in compliance with the Maritime Zone Law. Only one of the buildings was owned by a non-resident, and several were abandoned businesses or houses that were frequented by drug users.

The beachfront is now awaiting the second step of the make-over: the construction of a Malecon-style boardwalk that will run from estuary to estuary with costs estimated at around $385,000. It will be named the Amor de Temporada Boardwalk, a phrase borrowed from a song by a Guanacasteco singer called Seasonal Love, which mentions Playas del Coco.
